Composition with circles

 Circle: is a simple shape, a closed plane curve. All points are the same distance from the center. 

  1. You will be given a copy with some circles in it. Then, you will draw 10 extra circles wherever you want, and with different radius. It is important that these circles intersect each other.
  2. Next you will redraw all the circles in black ink (pen) with the help of the adapter and the compass
  3. To finish your composition you will have to decide wich parts of the circles go black or white, depending on the one next to it.

PI day

    Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi and talk to their friends about math.

    We are going to celebrate Pi Day by designing buildings and creating a skyline. Each number will be a different building.

Material:
   - Colour cardboard DIN A4
   - Newspaper, magazines, and other paper for the collage
   - Scissors
   - Glue

Building measures
    - Width: 7 cm  
   - Heighth: Each student will be given one of the Pi numbers. This number will be multiplied by 3 cm and the result number will be the height.

     Each student will decorate their building as their wish. It could be a house, a garage, a shop, a skyscraper, etc.

  • Positive. Term to describe the figure or subject. 
  • Negative. Term to describe the background.

Kandinsky.

Several Circles, 1926; Kandinsky.
    Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (4 December (16 December by the Gregorian calendar) 1866 – 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited with painting one of the first recognised purely abstract works.

We will create an artwork after Kandinsky's painting.

Abstract Art after Regular Geometric Shapes

This exercise is really easy to do and the results are amazing!!!!!
What do you have to do?
  1. Draw a regular geometric shape on a coloured cardboard, DIN A4.
  2. Draw the lines where you will be cutting the smaller shapes out.
  3. Cut out the pieces, if there are too many, write a number on them.
  4. Glue the pieces on another colored cardboard, but remember to leave a space in between them. Make sure all the pieces are on place!!!

Working with ... Organic and Geometric Shapes

     For this exercise each student has to choose an Organic and a Geometric Shape. They have to be easy shapes to recognize, because we are going to work with the silhouettes.

Example of Shapes:
  • Organic: fish, tree, flower, apple, person, etc
  • Geometric: key, knife, car, candel, scissors, etc.
Steps:
  1. Draw the silhouettes on a card.
  2. Cut the shapes out.
  3. Get a new white paper.
  4. Use the shapes as a stencil and draw several times the organic shape all over a the paper. It can be half shape on the sides.
  5. Now, do the same with the geometric shape. The interesting part of the composition is to draw one shape over the other.
  6. Re-trace with black ink ( 0'4), and erase the pencil once it is dry.
  7. Colour each piece in a different colour. For the background use a new colour (grey, black,...).

The result will be a colourful composition. Check the examples of other students:

Missing shapes. Optical Illusion.

Missing shapes, phantom shapes or Illusory contours.
These are diferent names for the same optical illusion.  

How many triangles do you see in this picture?


     Phantom shapes are a form of optical illusion where countours are percieved without colour change across the contour. That means that we see a shape that really does not exist.



     These are two simple missing shape optical illusions shown in black and white. The existence of a white triangle can easily be imagined in the top image while your brain can also easily create the existence of a white sphere in the lower image.

Shape. Symmetry

 Questions 
  1. Why learn about symmetry? 
  2. What do you notice about shapes or designs that have symmetry?
  3. Does it make a difference if the line of symmetry is vertical or horizontal? Why or why not?
  4. Locate two objects in the classroom: one that has symmetry and one that has not. Explain the differences.
-->   Symmetry is perhaps most familiar as an artistic concept than a math concept. Designs are said to be symmetric if they exhibit specific kinds of balance, repetition an harmony.


Think of the form of a butterfly; its right and left halves mirror each other. If you knew what the right half of a butterfly looked like, you could construct the left half by reflecting the right half over a line that divides the butterfly.
A line of symmetry divives a figure into two halves that are the mirror images of each other.

Types of symmetry_____________________________________________

Plane symmetry involves moving all points around the plane so that their positions relative to each other remain the same, although their absolute positions may change. Symmetries preserve distnces, angles, sizes, and shapes.
  • Rotation by 90 degrees about a fixed point is an example of a plane symmetry.
  • Reflection of a figure is when seen in a mirrow or atransparent surface. Another way to make a reflection is to fold a piece of paper and trace the figure onto the other side of the fold.
  • Traslation it is like moving the shape over and it is exactly the same the whole time. It just repeats and repeats.


1. Reflexion symmetry__________________________________________
  Miror symmetry is present whenever an object or design can be broken down into two parts, one of which is the reflection of the other.


Reflection symmetry is quite common in nature and art.




 







2. Rotational symmetry_______________________________________
      An object that has rotational symmetry will appear unchanged if rotated through an angle. A circle can be rotated any amount and still look like a circle, but most objects can be rotated only by some specific amount, depending on the design.

Organic and geometric shapes

ORGANIC and GEOMETRIC SHAPES___________________________________

    A shape is an element of art. Specifically, it is an enclosed space, the boundaries of which are defined by other elements of art (i.e.: lines, colours, values, textures, etc.). Shapes are limited to two dimensions: length and width.

    1. Geometric shapes:
  • Are circles, rectangles, squares, triangles and so on - have the clear edges one achieves when using tools to create them. 
  • Most geometric shapes are made by humans, though crystals are also considered to be geometric despite the fact that they are made in nature. 
   2. Organic shapes:
  • Are shapes with a natural look and a flowing and curving appearance. 
  • Organic shapes and forms are typically irregular or asymmetrical.  
  • Organic shapes are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.

Artists use organic shapes and geometric shapes in different ways:
  1. When attempting to create a piece that looks natural, flowing, soft or calming, organic shapes are generally the shapes of choice.
  2. When attempting to create a sense of chaos, anger, or rigidity, geometric shapes are used. Geometric shapes may also be used to create abstract interpretations of things that would normally be depicted as organic shapes.

SHAPE III. Polygons

Polygons_________________________________________

1. Triangle: It is a polygon with three sides and three angles. The three angles always add 180º.
  • Equilateral Triangle: Three equal sides and three equal angles, always 60º.
  • Isosceles Triangle: Two equal sides and two equal angles.
  • Scalene Triangle: No equal sides and no equal angles.

2. Quadrilateral. Quadrilateral just means “four sides”. Therefore, any four sided shape is a quadrilateral, but the sides have to be straight, and it has to be 2 dimensional.
  • Square: Four equal sides. Four equal angles, always 90°.
  • Rectangle: Opposite sides are parallel and of equal length. Four equal angles, always 90°.
  • Rhombus: Four equal sides. Opposite angles are parallel.
3. Regular polygons with more than 4 sides:
  • A pentagon is a 5-sided polygon.
  • An hexagon is a 6-sided polygon.
  • An heptagon is a 7-sided polygon.
  • An octagon is a 8-sided polygon.
 4. Star a plane figure with 5 or more points.

SHAPE II. Basic shapes

Basic Shapes_____________________________________________
The 3 basic shapes are:

         1.Circle: is a simple shape, a closed plane curve. All points are the same distance from the center.
                • The distance between any of the points and the centre is called the radius.
                • The Diameter starts at one side of the circle, goes through the center and ends on the other side.
        2. Triangle: is a polygon.
        3. Square: is a polygon.

  • A polygon is a flat shape with straight sides. The points where two edges meet are the polygon's vertices (singular: vertex) or corners.
  • Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes. They are made of straight lines, and the shape is "closed" (all the lines connect up).

  If there is a curve o the shape is not closed it is not a polygon.

Shape is one of the seven Elements of Art

  • What is a Shape?

1.  A shape is created when a line is enclosed.

2. It is a 2 dimensional area with width and lenght.
3. The are 2 types of shapes:
 Organic shapes

4. You can turn a Shape into a Form by adding 3D: a square into a cube, etc.
