Portraits: Silhouettes

     Remember that we already know what a silohuette is: it is the image of a person, an object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single colour, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject (Wikipedia). 

So let's put it into practice!!!

1. We will tape a paper to the wall and had them sit on a chair showing their profile.
2. A light will throw a shadow on the paper (white or coloured) that we will trace with a pencil.
3. We will cut along the line to get our silhouette.

    Creativity seems to never run out. This time, we'll see the incredible use of shadows in advertising.

 

Light direction

What happens when we change the light direction on our subject/object.

    This picture that I've found in internet is going to teach us how important light direction is in a photograph or artwork.

Silhouette.

      A silhouette is the image of a person, an object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single colour, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject (Wikipedia).

     In the days of long ago, before photography was invented, our great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers used to have portraits of themselves taken sideways. They were what were known as silhouette portraits, and they were not taken with a camera, but were cut out of thin black paper, and stuck upon a white card.

  Where are silhouettes used?

• Signs and  Graphic design       
• Shadow theatre
• Photography and Cinema, etc.

     Light and shadows visually define objects. Before you can draw the light and shadows you see, you need to train your eyes to see like an artist.

Values are the different shades of grey between white and black. Artists use values to translate the light and shadows to create the illusion of a third dimension.

     A full range of values is the basic ingredient for shading. When you can draw lots of different values, you can begin to add shading, and therefore depth, to your drawings. With shading, the magical illusion of three-dimensional reality appears on your drawing paper.
